I subscribe to dish network and get current UPN and WB stations from out of my area via satalite. I subscribe to everything including local stations (Macon) and the "superstations" package which includes WWOR-9 (UPN-My Network) & WPIX-11 (WB-CW network) New York City, WSBK-38 (UPN-My Network?) Boston, KTLA-5 (WB-CW) Los Angeles, KWGN-2 (WB-CW) Denver and WBZL-39 (WB-My Network) Miami. I get them all despite the fact that their programing is nearly the same in all of these cities. Same shows, different times because of of the time zones. But I enjoy watching the local news on these stations, especially the Hal Fishman commentary on KTLA Los Angeles. I also enjoy the varying commercials from the different cities.
Side note: in California they have "Carl's JR" and here in Georgia we have "Hardees". Same fast food restaurant, different names. and it's Carl's JR that had the infamous (but entertaining) Paris Hilton commercial. and KTLA ran that commercial ALOT! during their 10pm "Prime News".
BACK TO MY POINT........"MY NINE"
I was watching WWOR last night and noticed they now call themselves "My 9" in advance of their becoming a My Network affiliate in the fall. Their news is now called "My 9 News".
Their logo and graphics. music and news opening are unchanged except for the removal of the UPN logo for a few months leaving the space next to the number 9 blank and now they have placed the word "MY" next to the number 9 in lower case letters using the same font as in their call letters under the number 9.
I wonder if they have planned a makeover when MYNetwork begins in the fall. I remember reading somewhere that since this station is co-owned with FOX 5 New York that WWOR will move from its home in New Jersey (where "9 Broadcast Plaza" was built in Secaucus in the mid 1980's) back into NYC and share studio space with WNYW Fox 5.
So maybe this has a ring to it...."My Nine"? When I was watching it seemed like they repeated "My nine" more times than necessary. It could get old on the ears fast.
WWOR is one of the UPN stations that is owned by FOX (co-owned in New York with WNYW-5) and was left out of the merger between WB and UPN creating The CW. They were one of many UPN stations to immediately remove all references to UPN in their branding, slogans and on websites. WWOR went from "UPN 9" and "UPN 9 News" to simply "Channel 9" and "9 News". Now it is "My Nine"
Channel 9 in New York (Secaucus New Jersey) has a long history. For decades as WOR-TV (three letter calls) to WWOR since the late 1980's. As an independent they were one of many "superstations" seen on cable systems around the United States in the 1980's providing national coverage of New York Mets Baseball. They removed themselves from the national exposure when FCC rules allowed local stations more exclusive rights to programing and it became a problem for WWOR to offer some syndicated programs in an area where a local station offered the same program. Shortly after that change they became a charter UPN affiliate.
This station had "The Million Dollar" movie at 8pm each night as an independent using a great theme to introduce the film to be shown that night. They had the legendary late night talk show JOE FRANKLIN that was a New York tradition for decades. And this station had the first TV talk show similar to what we get with Jerry Springer and Maury Povich today.....First a local show called "9 Broadcast Plaza" and the late MORTON DOWNEY JR.
Ok, I would not be proud of that part of history (I hate talk shows) but it is history nonetheless.
Its current news team includes many New York legends like weatherman Storm Field, who has been on NYC Television for 30 years and whos father is Dr. Frank Field, another NYC TV legend.
