Andy Griffith or George Bush? What shall we air?
I wonder if anyone asked that question at WMAZ as President George Bush had a speech at the Macon Centreplex (convention center) from 5:30pm today until just after 6pm. His speech was carried LIVE on WMGT-41 and on local radio.
The city of Macon had a visit by President George Bush who made an appearance at a fundraiser for congressional candidate Mac Collins. The president's visit included a 35 minute speech. It is the first visit of a sitting US President to the city of Macon since Bill Clinton came to Macon in 1996.
WMGT covered the entire speech during their normally scheduled 5:30 pm newscast and continued with an expanded newscast after the President's speech ended pre-empting their 6pm "Seinfeld" reruns.
WMGT had crews at the convention center and offered great news coverage further showing their commitment to local news coverage. Great job! (now expand to weekends!)
However the GRAND OLE' 13- WMAZ did NOT broadcast the entire speech choosing to keep their original evening schedule which is news at 5, "Andy Griffith" at 5:30 and news at 6pm. Of course they covered the news story during their newscasts but they failed to air the actual speech. They did air snippets of the president's speech during the 6pm newscast and they had reporter Brittney Bailey outside and they boasted the fact that they had the President's speech available online and they had streamed it LIVE on their website.
Well, having the speech streamed on their website is nice, but are you a website or a television station?
This may come as a shock for the people of Macon but the folks at WMAZ could do without airing Andy, Opie, Goober and Aunt Bee for one day. They could have broadcast the speech over the station's actual TV signal. It's ok to pre-empt The Andy Griffith Show. After all, how many years have we had this Mayberry tradition at 5:30? (I've lived here for 12, so how may more years before that?)
sorry for getting on a rant.
I did not check WGXA and I doubt they would interrupt their usual afternoon sitcoms for anything.
I am surprised that WMAZ did not give more broadcast coverage of the president's visit by showing the actual speech live. They are usually very involved in these type of events. Especially if they are rare events like a Presidential visit.
The most I see from them tonight was to have our incumbent congressman Jim Marshall interviewed live in the WMAZ studio during the 6pm newscast.
WMAC-AM 940 radio also broadcast the President's entire speech.
