ATLANTA -- Monica will drop the name Kaufman in favor of her married name, Monica Pearson, beginning with Channel 2 Action News at 5 on Thursday.
Since Monica’s marriage to John Pearson, Sr. last year she’s gradually been changing her name in all of the official places.
“It’s just the natural order of things” said Pearson.
“I changed to my married name immediately in all of the official places when John and I married just over a year ago. I have been working my way through the driver’s license, credit cards and organizational listings," she added.
“Now, at Channel 2, we have gone HD with the new set, new graphics and promotional materials. It’s just the right time to change to “Pearson” on the air as well,” said Pearson.
Having anchored at Channel 2 for 31 years, Monica is one of the few people in Atlanta known very well simply by their first name so she is not worried about her viewers getting confused about who is delivering their news.
Her anchor position on the number one station in the Atlanta market makes her a sought after speaker. She’s responded to the community’s needs through the years with a tireless and committed schedule based on where she could do the most good.
Monica is a member of various professional organizations, including the Society of Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi, the National Association of Black Journalists, the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists and the Atlanta Junior League.
She has received numerous awards, including 23 local and Southern Regional Emmy Awards for anchoring, reporting and for her prime time Closeup specials.
Monica was the first African-American and the first woman to anchor an early evening newscast in Atlanta.
One thing will not change...Monica and her co-anchor, John Pruitt, will continue to bring you “coverage you can count on” on Channel 2 Action News at 5, 6 and 11 p.m.
