WAKA-8 is the CBS affilaite for Montgomery and Selma Alabama. They have a troubled history. WSLA-8 signed on in Selma around 1960 and only covered the small community of Selma. They were an ABC affiliate (the "third ranked" network at the time). WSLA had financial problems and bad luck. The TV station's facilities burned down in the late 1960's forcing channel 8 off the air for several years. By the time the station returned to the air in 1973 as a CBS affiliate, WSLA had battled with Montgomery's UHF stations WCOV and WKAB (WNCF) in an attempt to move channel 8's transmitter closer to Montgomery for many years so they could increase their coverage area. Eventually, channel 8 would move and become WAKA-8 and for a while Central Alabama had two CBS stations. In 1986 CBS dropped WCOV-20 as the Montgomery area CBS station and WAKA built studios in East Montgomery officially becoming the second VHF station in the Montomery market. Today WAKA calls itself "CBS-8" Studios located on the Eastern Bypass (East Blvd) in Montgomery. Building looks small but is long toward the rear Station vehicles: Ford van, Ford F-150, Windstar and Explorer. Jeep Cherokee. They also have a SATURN SUV. (Saturn of Montgomery is located next door to the WAKA studios)
