I recently discovered that WXIA and WGCL had been removed from the lineup on COX (cable) Communications in "Middle Georgia".
I dropped cable for Dish Network 3 years ago as a disgusted cable customer. When I had Cox Cable, the Atlanta TV stations were frequently blacked out because of network and syndicated exclusivity in favor of the local stations in the Macon Market. FCC rules allow local stations to have exclusive rights to programing. ALL Macon area stations do claim their rights and fear they are losing viewers to the better quality Atlanta or Columbus area stations. (which they were)
The result led to so many hours of blank screens or informercials replacing programing on several channels in the basic tier. This included all four major Atlanta network affiliates and one Columbus Affilate (WAGA was dropped in 1998, WTVM-Columbus was dropped in 2000)
Basically the only programs on an Atlanta station that was'nt blacked out was local news. But the cable company kept those channel positions as Atlanta network affiliates for years and filled blacked out programing with informercials and local car dealer showcase programs. WAGA was replaced with the WB network feed and is now the CW network feed as "WB-3", now "CW Middle Georgia" on cable channel 3.
Now, WXIA (cable channel 12) and WGCL (cable channel 11) are completely removed from the local cable lineup, replaced with advertisements and local religious programing. Only WSB remains on the system, but don't expect to watch any ABC or Oprah. It's all still blocked out. All that could be seen is the news. Everything network or syndicated is blocked.
Funny how it would be COX owned WSB that remains on the COX owned cable company in Macon Georgia. It's still channel 2 on cable channel 13 while our own WMAZ channel 13 is on cable channel 4. One would think they would replace one of these channels with a network that is not available in this area. But they haven't. No problem raising rates though.
So, no more ATL Television on Macon cable.
And I have to say that is really is OUR loss.
(well, those who have cable)
