When the WB and UPN announced earlier this year that they were combining to become the CW, WATL-TV (channel 36) was orphaned with no "Gilmore Girls," no "7th Heaven," no primetime schedule.
On Monday, WATL said it was joining My Network TV, which will launch this fall with nightly telenova soap-type dramas in 13-week blocks modeled after the popular Spanish versions. The first two, which will be in high definition, are called "Desire" and "Secret Obessions."
"It's an exciting new program development and model," said WATL station manager Steve Carver. "I applaud those guys for taking this chance and doing something different."
"They'll have multiple storylines," he added. "They'll be youth centered and a lot of fun."
The series will air Monday through Saturdays from 8 to 10 p.m. WATL will find other programs to fill Sunday nights.
The CW programming — which will combine UPN hits such as "America's Next Top Model" and "Everybody Hates Chris" with the WB's best such as "Gilmore Girls," "Smallville" and "7th Heaven" — will air this fall on WUPN-TV (channel 69).
Twentieth Television, which is creating My Network TV, is also developing the other programs such as:
—"Catwalk," a search for the next supermodel, which sounds suspiciously like "America's Next Top Model."
—"Celebrity Love Island," a reality show in which celebrities are paired with non celebrities on a tropical island. This sounds like a blend of "Temptation Island" and "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Outta Here!"
—"On Scene," a crime investigative series.
—"America's Brainiest," a game show.
The WB, according to Carver, will keep much of its existing syndicated daytime programming, including "The Jerry Springer Show," "Maury," "My Wife & Kids," "Friends," "Family Feud," "The Simpsons" and "Sex & the City."
The network is also picking up some new syndicated shows including a fresh talk show starring comic Greg Behrendt, old episodes of Fox's "American Idol," ABC sitcom "According to Jim," FX drama "The Shield" and NBC's "Scrubs."
WATL will air WB primetime programming until the end of August or so. My Network launches Sept. 5.
