Montgomery Alabama's first TV station was is WCOV-TV, channel 20.
Signed on in 1953, this station was a CBS affiliate in Montgomery until CBS dropped them in 1986 in favor of the existing VHF CBS affiliate WAKA-8 which was licensed to Selma but applied to move their transmitter to cover the Montgomery area.
After losing CBS, WCOV discontinued their newscast and later joined the (NEW) FOX television network, which it remains affilaited with today. The station produces two popular programs. They are local versions of Fox's popular "Cops" and called "M.P.D" (Montgomery Police Department) and "County Law" (Montgomery County Sheriffs Department).
For years, WCOV identified on air only by their call letters. In recent years, they have called themelves "Fox 20".
WCOV has an extensive history on their website www.wcov.com.
These photos are of the WCOV studios inside Montgomery City Limits. Original home of WCOV TV and former home of the WCOV radio stations. When WCOV AM and WCOV-FM radio was sold, those stations moved out of this facility.
Located off Adrian Lane in a residential area south of Huntingdon College. The address is One WCOV Avenue and the property is located behind private residences on all sides, separated by thick landscaping and fencing. Access to WCOV is controlled by a security gate.
This is also the original transmitter location. However WCOV uses a much taller transmitter tower from a different location providing great coverage of Central and South Alabama.
